21st Century Skills of Students in a Technical Vocational Education and Training Institution in the Philippines

Abstract


Objectives: This study aims to assess the 21st Century Skills of students in One Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Institution in the Philippines. The study specifically described the profile of the students; the significant difference of the 21st century skills in terms of course, gender and age. The study employed descriptive and comparative methods of research. Methods: The descriptive method was used to describe the characteristics and the competency level of 21st century skills of sixty-eight TVET students enrolled in the first semester school year 2019-2020 at Camarines Sur Insitute of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Philippines. The similarities and differences of 21st century skills of the students, a comparative method was used. The percentage, ranking, average weighted mean, and one-way ANOVA were used for data and statistical analysis in determining the interpretation based on the 4-point Likert’s rating scale used. Findings: The study reveals that the overall level of competency of 21st century skills of TVET Students is 3.081 interpreted as moderately competent which implies that the students can apply their skills in simple situations. Conclusion: TVET students in the Philippines possess the 21st century skills with moderate category.

 

Tujuan: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menilai Keterampilan siswa abad ke-21 di Institusi Satu Pendidikan dan Pelatihan Kejuruan Teknis (TVET) di Filipina. Studi ini secara khusus menggambarkan profil para siswa; perbedaan signifikan dari keterampilan abad ke-21 dalam hal tentu saja, jenis kelamin dan usia. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif dan komparatif. Metode: Metode deskriptif digunakan untuk menggambarkan karakteristik dan tingkat kompetensi keterampilan abad ke-21 dari enam puluh siswa TVET yang terdaftar di sekolah semester pertama tahun 2019-2020 di Institut Perikanan dan Ilmu Kelautan Camarines Sur, Filipina. Persamaan dan perbedaan keterampilan siswa abad ke-21, metode komparatif digunakan. Persentase, peringkat, rata-rata tertimbang rata-rata, dan ANOVA satu arah digunakan untuk data dan analisis statistik dalam menentukan interpretasi berdasarkan skala penilaian 4 poin Likert yang digunakan. Temuan: Studi ini mengungkapkan bahwa tingkat kompetensi keterampilan TVET abad ke-21 secara keseluruhan ditafsirkan 3.081 sebagai cukup kompeten yang menyiratkan bahwa siswa dapat menerapkan keterampilan mereka dalam situasi sederhana. Kesimpulan: Siswa TVET di Filipina memiliki keterampilan abad ke-21 dengan kategori sedang
