Abstract

This research analyzes a corpus-based appraisal from the subsystem of attitude and graduation (force) with Kevin Kwan’s Rich People Problem and its Indonesian translated novel Masalah Orang Kaya as the main data. This study aims to see which type of attitude has the highest frequency, and whether or not there is a graduation change of the attitude in the translated novel. The method is descriptive qualitative, using appraisal theory, and AntPConc software. The result shows that all types of attitudes occur in the translated novel, and they are affect, graduation, and judgment. The most prominent attitude found in the excerpt is judgment with 29 in total, followed by affect with 21 in total, and appreciation with 18 in total. There are 16 types of judgment that change its graduation and 13 types of judgment do not. Out of 21 types of affect in the data, 7 changes in the graduation and 14 do not change. Lastly, out of 18 types of appreciation, 9 changes in graduation and the other 9 do not change. The novel shows that each character in the beginning of the story gives appreciation towards each other, in each situation, and materials mentioned in the story line.
