Abstract

Mathematics is a crucial subject for students, yet teachers face unique challenges when effectively teaching it. The aim of this research was to identify the topics that were most challenging to be taught by junior high school mathematics teachers to students and the reasons why those topics were difficult to teach. A quantitative survey method was employed, involving 29 active junior high school mathematics teachers participating in the Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran (MGMP) Matematika SMP activities in Aceh Tengah Regency, Indonesia. The research findings revealed that geometry was the most challenging topic for teachers to teach, followed by statistics as the second and third most challenging topics chosen by the respondents, while numbers were comparatively easier to teach than other topics. The most dominant factor that contributed to the difficulty of teaching a topic was the lack of adequate teaching aids, followed by teachers' struggles to meet the diverse needs of students and their search for effective teaching strategies. Conversely, teachers' personal preferences for a topic were found to have had the least impact on the difficulty of teaching it. This research provided insights into the challenges faced by mathematics educators and suggested potential areas for improvement in mathematics. education.
